Parkinson’s Disease
Neurological Support for Motor Function
Music therapy provides a meaningful and evidence-based approach to addressing vocal and respiratory changes associated with Parkinson’s disease. Among the most common and impactful symptoms of Parkinson’s are reduced vocal volume, breathiness, and decreased speech clarity which can significantly affect communication and quality of life. Music therapy offers a structured, clinical approach to help manage these symptoms and support greater vocal function.
Singing serves as a central therapeutic modality in this work. Vocal production during singing requires and trains deep diaphragmatic breathing, sustained breath support, and increased engagement of the muscles responsible for voice. With consistent practice, these physiological benefits can carry over into everyday speech, supporting clearer articulation and improved vocal projection in daily communication.
Sessions are grounded in the principles of Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT™), incorporating specialized techniques designed to improve breath control and capacity and enhance vocal loudness and pitch range. Interventions are individually tailored to reflect each client’s therapeutic needs and are offered in both individual and group formats as part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care approach.
